Details
The partnership between the iconic adidas and the Parley organization was first announced on Earth Day 2015. In the 5 years since, adidas has delivered on its promise to take big, bold steps to build a better future for the oceans - not just by phasing out plastics and microbeads use, but also by launching entire product lines and new collaborations.
The adidas brand is not only a supporter of the Parley organization, but a true collaborator and partner!
To launch the partnership and demonstrate a shared vision for the collaboration, Parley and adidas unveiled a concept shoe made from recycled marine plastic waste at the United Nations in 2015. The Ultra Boost prototype featured an upper made from yarns and filaments regenerated and recycled from marine debris, and illegal deep-sea fishing nets . The fishing gear was once used in poaching operations targeting vulnerable toothfish species in the Southern Ocean.
With more than 8 million tonnes of plastic entering the planet's oceans each year, both adidas and Parley recognize the true scale of the problem we face as a planet - and advocate that only massive change will make a meaningful difference. So together they began identifying quick fixes and investing in research and development to get concept shoes and upcycled plastics into adidas' global supply chain at a level that would make a real impact. The adidas brand moved quickly to phase out the use of plastic bags in its retail stores by the end of Q1 2016. Together with its partner COTY, adidas also phased out the use of plastic microbeads in all licensed body care products and stopped using them, plastic bottles at all meetings in his headquarters.
Meanwhile, the Parley organization worked to develop the world's first supply chain for upcycled marine waste, creating Ocean Plastic® as a powerful symbol of change. Originally from islands in the Maldives, they have now extended the collection network to the Dominican Republic and Sri Lanka, creating a steady demand for plastic waste that would otherwise end up in the Indian Ocean and Caribbean Sea.
This expansion, in turn, allowed adidas to speed up production and expand the number of products made from upcycled materials. In addition to clothing such as shirts, socks and other sportswear, adidas produced 1 million pairs of shoes with Parley Ocean Plastic® in 2017, then 5 million in 2018, 11 million in 2019, and now plans to produce around 15 million in 2020. less virgin plastic, reduced CO2 emissions and greater awareness of the issue – with each product produced serving as a wearable symbol of change that sparks questions, discussions and ideas for even greater progress.
