Merrell differs from other brands in that their shoes are designed to accommodate slightly wider feet. They have an anatomically shaped tip that offers enough space for free movement of the toes. It produces barefoot shoes and tries to promote the idea "We care about the environment as much as you do."

The first Merrell boots were hand-made to order by cowboy and bootmaker Randy Merrell in Utah. Merrell used a cowboy shoe hoof to make his hiking boots. Merrell's first boots, like cowboy boots, had to fit perfectly even without laces to protect the heel from chafing, to secure the instep to ensure stability while walking and to prevent the foot from sliding.
