Details
The GORE-TEX® membrane is characterized by its water resistance and wind resistance while ensuring breathability. It is composed of a thin porous membrane made of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon), which is laminated between other textiles, most often nylon or polyester. It contains 1.4 million microscopic pores per cm² that are approximately 20,000x smaller than a drop of water and 700x wider than a water vapor molecule that can easily pass through. This ensures complete waterproofing on the outside and sweat permeability on the inside.
All products containing a GORE-TEX® membrane must pass demanding stress tests that determine their physical resistance (e.g. against tearing or abrasion) and water resistance. Not just any manufacturer may use the GORE-TEX® membrane in their products, but only those whose products meet high quality standards.
