We can find the beginnings of swimming already in prehistoric times. Competitive swimming, like most sports, originated in England in the 19th century.
In 1896, swimming first appeared at the Summer Olympics in Athens. 100, 500, and 1200 meters were swum in any way, because at that time the rules for individual swimming styles were not yet unified.
