Volleyball was invented on February 9, 1895, by William G. Morgan from the YMCA in Massachusetts (USA). The goal was to create a non-contact indoor sport with minimal risk of injury. William originally named it Mintonette, after the way the balls were played, the sport later came to be called volleyball.
In 1947, the international volleyball federation FIVB was founded. The first World Championship was held in 1949 in Prague. Since 1964, volleyball has been part of the program of the Olympic Games. In 1986, the FIVB also adopted another variant of this sport - beach volleyball, which became part of the program of the Olympic Games in 1996.
